Bumblebee

Bombus terrestris

We have had a rather gloomy day, but the light brought out the dayglo quality in these poppies. I saw the bee go into the flower and stood by at the ready.

Several people have asked if poppies grow wild here. They do not. I brought them to my garden, toss seeds about each season, and allow the flowers to self-sow. Seedlings that come up where I need to put vegetables in are pulled out, but I like to leave one or two in those sorts of places. The poppy in this shot is growing with the peas, which don't seem to mind. I don't know of any other place where poppies are given such freedom.

This looks good in large, and there's a burgundy poppy from last year.
