Money....

... is the root of all evil. Today I spent a mad afternoon in the city centre, merely wanting to purchase a 2010 desk diary. The rest of Liverpool wanted to spend obscene amounts of money on piles of nonsensical junk, and had brought all their young, greedy and badly-behaved offspring along for the occasion. Queues at the coffee houses extended into the streets, although I managed to get my caffeine fix (for free) by sneaking into Caffe Nero where I bagged the last seat and was, after a decent interval, served by #1 daughter who is the assistant manager there. The station was similarly packed out, and Merseyrail staff were busy shoehorning commuters onto the platforms and away from the escalators bearing ever more Burger King-chomping kids and laden shoppers. I won't be repeating the experience on a weekend again. What a contrast to the true spirit of Christmas I was feeling yesterday.
