Rippingale Sunset in March

Spotted the sunset from my chair and grabbed the camera, which had my macro lens on it so I didn't think I'd manage to get anything blippable but didn't want to miss the moment.

As you can see, the sun is relatively high above the horizon, and the view was not quite as dark in the foreground as it looks here. If anybody can offer advice on how to capture a sunset when the sun is still quite bright, without losing mid and dark tones I would be very grateful for a future attempt! I did try using Color Efex on it, but nothing there really helped.
