Mod Cons

We crossed the water from Bantry to Whiddy Island for a guided walk on a perfect bright and breezy day.

The island has an odd feeling, utilitarian, almost desolate in places, not prettified, but full of history derived from its strategic, sheltered position at the head of Bantry Bay. A ruined church inside a huge circular structure described in Wikipedia as 'early ecclesiastical enclosure' seemed to me to be considerably older (with the archaeologist's catch-all qualifier of 'possibly' definitely relevant) and several other sites our guide only barely mentioned.

A sad gem is the now dilapidated single-room National School, still with some of its furniture and fittings in place and in use within living memory.
