Bishopthorpe Palace Gatehouse

I have driven past Bishopthorpe Palace many times and never really given it much thought - until Blip came along! Today the clock really seemed to shine against a featureless cloud covering. Alas no sun shining when I actually got to it!

The palace is the residence of The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. As well as living quarters there are also offices, meeting rooms and worship areas. The palace and grounds are also used for charity events, evening receptions, village fetes and dinners.

The village of Thorpe St. Andrew, just a few miles south of the Minster, was bought by the then Bishop in 1226 and was later renamed Bishopthorpe.

The gatehouse is all that can be seen from the road. The clock here was restored in 2013 - 100 years after it was originally installed. The Bishop was on hand to restart the clock after restoration.
