The Drinker

It never ceases to amaze me how different people are. Put in identical situations we often perceive things in totally opposite ways. And, of course, our complex society couldn't exist if this wasn't the case. It just wouldn't work if we all saw and thought and felt in the same way. I've been reminded of this a few times today.

I'm developing a series of shots depicting pub doorway culture, capturing a slice of indoor life forced outside, the smokers having to escape into the 'fresh' air for a few minutes for their fix. It gives me a chance to chat to people I would never normally encounter. Most have proved very friendly, far more open than I would have suspected to be honest.

This chap wasn't actually so friendly - at first anyway. The sun was out when I approached him and I asked if he was enjoying the weather. "Not really", was his honest reply. He was quite indifferent to the nice weather. "I'm not one for walking along the canal or stuff like that", he continued. "We're drinkers here". I thought it odd that anyone would label themself in quite such a simple way. He thought I was after something from him and I explained that I was just looking to take a photograph. I got a curt "F-off" to that, but I carried on chatting anyway, talking about some of the characters I've met, possibly people he knew. After a few minutes he quite surprised me saying, "Go on then". So I took a few shots and asked him his name. "I'm not going to be telling you me name", he says. But then a few seconds later he tells me it's Dennis. So here we have him. Dennis. The Drinker. No judgement on my part. Everyone has their story, their reasons, their unique way of living. I actually rather enjoyed our somewhat surreal conversation.

I was in the office before sunrise and the preparation paid off. The presentation went well. The client was happy and it should lead to important business. Forrest is over for the evening so I'm now going to cook and chill for a few hours with him. Thanks for all your best wishes. It's so great to know that you have people rooting for you - especially as I'm living as something of a recluse at the moment. Cheers everyone.
