Red Road - 5

I've been neglecting my Red Road series for a while, so I have returned to it today.

Certainly there is still plenty of time as they don't start coming down until around Spring 2010 and the final 4 blocks may not come down until around 2016.

The first demolition will involve 308 flats in a double block.

Some historical facts:-

* The original building cost was to be £5 million but had almost doubled by the time work was complete.

* In 1977 a young boy died in a fire on the 23rd floor and 100 families had to be evacuated overnight. Many refused to return.

* Around 1980 two of the blocks were transferred for use by students and the YMCA.
