Besieged

The plaque to the left reads, 'Prince Rupert stayed here after his quarrel with the King. October 19th 1645' and the one to the right, 'This was the Governor's House when Newark was besieged 1643 - 1646'

Newark was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. Charles I stayed nearby. The Church of England commemorates Charles Stuart, King of England on January 30th each year. A chalice is on display in the treasury of the church. History suggests that the King himself received the sacrament from it, as others have done many times since.

The Governor's House was severely damaged by canon fire from the Parliamentarians. The church spire is still holed today. That's a story for another blip. Info about the siege.

Sorry I haven't commented much in the last couple of days, it's been hectic what with extreme photography and looming submission deadlines. Step ladder banned for health and safety reasons.

Yesterday's blip was tweaked in Picasa, used the focal b&w option to retain the green of the leaf in the puddle. It's a crude tool, only useable when there's a clear enough margin around the circle of colour. Thanks for all your comments and guidance.

Sleep well northerners and have a good day southerners.
