Killdeer

Weird name, cute birds.
I think one of the reasons I like watching birds is the surprise of seeing something new, whether it's a first time sighting or a familiar bird doing something unexpected. And the opposite is true as well - there's something exciting about learning the habits of birds - it's like a doorway into another world (and maybe the only one where I have any patience :)
Alternate explanation: I am a huge nerd.
