How can folk do this

A friend has a few horses ,and recently she rescued this big guy.
He is very timid and wary of humans, no wonder ,after being left out in a field all winter.
He is covered in mud rash all over, and his coat is coming out in lumps.
My friend shaved him and is caring well for him.
He gets supplements to his diet and cream on his sores.
He was a steeplechaser, I'm sure with the TLC he I getting now I will post pic when he recovers fully
