Some very accurate observations
A fellow blipper linked to a fabulous blog on my journal the other day which had some very accurate observations concerning the Arab workplace.
Here they are:
1. Organisation members are motivated by friendship and power needs, rather than by performance objective.
2. Social formalities are extremely important.
3. Managers rely heavily on kinship ties to get things done.
4. Nepotism is regarded as natural and acceptable.
5. Punctuality and time constraints are much less concern than in western cultures.
6. Subordinates act with deference and obedience to those above them in the hierarchy.
I would add the following:
7. Subordinates with a qualification over and above a degree will liken this achievement to being a demi-God and will forcibly demand respect and quiz others about their (hopefully lesser) achievements in an attempt further enforce self-worth.
8. The smallest point, no matter how trivial, will be debated at length to show off any new words learned in English recently.
9. Nonsense will be delivered at maximum volume so as to distract the listener from the shite that is being articulated.
10. The way things have been done in the past is the way things will be done until the end of time.
and more specifically:
11. Instead of teaching, medication and food can be consumed in front bewilderedly silent students for the first half hour of any lesson if so desired.
12. Those who can't be bothered to teach a class should just cancel it and go for a walk/surf the internet.
13. Part-time staff who work only 4 hours a week should expect anything they want when requested.
14. Thinking outside the box is forbidden. A small box should be created inside the normal box and any thinking should be done inside that.
My colleagues drove me fucking nuts today.
Can you tell?
