Wigram Airbase...well it was...
I was around the back of Wigram today and got a great view back to the control tower where I used to work. Back in those days we had an Air Force, and there was constant drumming of engines and appliances around the base. There were flight schools for basic training in fixed wing and helicopters and constant activity with visiting strike wings and transport aircraft. There was much varitey in exercises and training manouevres and it was a fun place for young controllers to work, although at times quite alarming as well. I can clearly remember being in charge of trainee night circuits and having hercules come in lights off to do phantom dropping of troops, in the middle of the field, or a casual beat up by passing Australian F1-11s who screamed through before we could spot them.
I really liked this photo, as it shows the desperate state it has descended to over recent years, even the sheep looked languid and unintereed.
