Popped round to see some old friends, one of whom was at the root of my rather reflective blip of January 13, when I went to visit her in hospital after she had just come through a brain operation. She has made good progress and is doing really well now, so I was very pleased to see her looking much better.

Her husband is very keen on old MGs, driving them, racing them, working on them. I couldn't wait to see his latest project, an MG TD that he has been lovingly restoring. He has just sold it and it was on a trailer awaiting its new owner. It looks wonderful, with its fresh paint and the wonderful patina of the well-preserved old leather in its snug two-seater cabin.

Years ago, while studying journalism at college in Essex, I had an MG TC that was as beautiful as it was unreliable. Old college chums recall pushing it more often than riding in it. Classic cars are fun, but they can be hard work!
