It's been a funny old day!
Nothing today has turned out quite as I expected.
One of those, you just wouldn't believe moments this afternoon.
Have spent much of the last few weeks working on a problem that is impacting one of our biggest customers. Much wading through databases to work out what I should be happening. Got all the issues identified and a complete data model to show all the issues that we think exist, but an an answer to a question posed to the IT developers didn't stack up with what was expected. Not even close. This prompted more questions, moments of self doubt, am I in the right job…..
A two hour call after lunch with one of the go to guys and we worked out that what should have been happening for the last eighteen months hasn't!
The main problem with tinkering with things on the production system meant that we couldn't test changes that were being done without the customer being impacted. Of course we see the fallacy of that now. Fear of testing? Mmm. Short cut to nowhere.
We worked out that - It's not only not working now, but, has never worked as we expected since it was installed in a rush eighteen months ago. Every change we've done since in order to respond to customer complaints and observations has had no effect at all. Only with constant asking why, why, why…. have we got to an answer. Now, lets think what the customer might think of this - Doesn't take much.
A painful journey. A painful conclusion. It's been a funny old day.
Went out to get a sandwich at lunch. Instead of going straight back, I took a drive up a road not knowing where it went, but, hoping it went up the hill across the other side of town. It did - not only that, I found some super locations for future blips as well as todays. A couple of other examples starting here!

This is looking across the valley towards Newnham. A complete surprise. I'll be back.
