Diary of an Edinburgher

Fighting with sheets

Should I hang the washing out this morning? I’d look out and see sunshine, blue skies and a gentle breeze, then I’d look out five minutes later and it’d be raining, dark skies and a howling wind. Decided to just use the pulley.

Why then did I find myself out in a gale, fighting with damp sheets as they tried to either wrap me up or take off over the wall, with fingers that were too cold to fix them quickly enough to the line?

The upstairs neighbour hangs out washing and leaves it for days. I looked out this morning and saw it lying tangled on the grass. The line had come down. I considered, successfully, to pretend that I hadn’t seen it. But after five minutes I had to give in and go out and rescue it. Of course, I happened to go out when there was a howling gale from the Arctic. What a faff trying to put the line up again and untangle washing. I was frozen when I eventually got back in. Bad words were uttered.

Later I spotted the chap untangling the washing. I went out to talk to him. He was thankful I’d rescued it, but decided to leave it for another ten minutes as it was sunny again, and anyway, the washing was wet. Again. An hour later it was still there, wrapped round the wall. I went out to rescue it, but it started to sleet, so I retreated. I really really love my pulley. He did eventually take it in. He seemed surprised when I told him it had been out all week.

Rang a firewood place about buying semi dried wood in bulk for next winter. Problem is, they’d dump a humungous pile on the pavement and I’d have to move it to the shed. Had a chat with a nice chap who said what they could do was to bag it, to make it easier to move. It would add to the cost, mind. Trouble is, the bike shed - soon to be wood shed - is full of Christmas tree clippings and bags of coal… But I can order and pay for the wood now, and it can be delivered later. Sounds like the best option.

Only popped out briefly with my camera (apart from the washing line fiasco). I have some wee snowdrops in my garden.

I said, ‘I have some wee snowdrops in my garden’. :-))
