Playing The Fool

Spotted on the way back to the station in Stratford-on-Avon this morning, after yesterday's Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies theatre-fest.

The Fool in Shakespeare is a particularly intriguing character - someone who is allowed to speak truth to power but has to do so elliptically, disguising his meaning.

"A fool thinks himself to be wise,
But a wise man knows he is a fool."
