St Peter's Church, Baylham
Baylham is a tiny hamlet to the west of Ipswich, it has the Rare Breeds Farm a lovely old (non working) water mill and this 12th century church
St Peter's was built in the 12th century and in the early 13th century the brick porch was added. The gothic style windows were inserted during the 14th/15th century and it was fully restored in the 19th century.
On reading through the history I found this statement. In 1643 the Puritan inspector of churches, William Dowsing visited the church in search of 'superstitious pictures or inscriptions' to destroy. He reported that 'there is Trinity in a triangle on the font and a cross, and the steps (to the chancel) to be levelled by the Minister in 21 days'. It didn't say whether the items were destroyed!
