Windmill 'Uitwijkse molen'
Driving from Brussels to Amsterdam this morning a quick blip turn off the motorway when the sight of windmlls and a junction coincided :))
The information sign said that 'Uitwijkse molen', was built around 1700 it is in Sleeuwijk - Holland
I am also reliably informed that this mill is in fact a wipwatermolen or hollow post mill, and is the oldest type of polder in the Netherlands. Throughout the centuries farmers have been pumping water from polders into the rivers, thus turning swamp into usable land. This has resulted in the creation of present-day polder landscapes that are seen all over as grasslands with drainage channels. These mills effectively lifted the water 1.5m put it in the river and created usable land, clever ( I thought they all made flour and things)
I am now in Schipol and hope to get home before midnight :)
