Pool of Cletts

Ollie had a good brush up at the weekend and is still looking relatively respectable so to maintain his cleanliness we went for a sandy beach walk today, rather than plouter through the mud again!

The church, St Peter's Kirk, and cemetery are still in use, although regular services are only held here in the summer months. It is a wild spot for a cemetery but then most Orkney ones do seem to be build on a windswept bit of coastline with sand for easy digging. There has been a kirk on the spot since Pictish times and there is a beautiful Pictish stone in the church itself.

The round ruin is the base of an old windmill and the house along side, although ruined, still has a very productive garden, probably due to the amount of seaweed that gets put on it!

Lots of birds about, gulls and waders mostly, and unusually for this time of the year, another human and dog on the beach! The air was thick with salt spray and I could hardly see through my glasses but I decided to risk getting my camera out all the same!
