The Final Farewell
Our route south took us close to the National Railway Museum at Shildon, where the A4 Pacific engines that we met at The Great Gathering in York had been on display. Although the exhibition ending the day before, it was worth a slight detour to see who was still around.
Mallard and Union of South Africa had already left but Dwight D. Eisenhower and Dominion Of Canada were tucked up in the engine shed (they'll be there for another few weeks before departing to their homes across the Atlantic) and Sir Nigel Gresley and Bittern were still in steam.
Here Bittern's driver shares a yarn with another rail enthusiast.
