New Year, New Life

Hope springs eternal

Highgate Cemetery (East)

Managed to get in a short walk this grey afternoon - up to the park and back down Swain's Lane which runs between the two parts of Highgate Cemetery. The cemetery is one of the 'maginificent seven' built in a ring around London in the late C19 when London's parish churchyards had become overcrowded.

The west cemetery is older and includes magnificent catacombs. It's only open for guided tours. The east cemetery, where this picture was taken, is where Karl Marx is buried. You have to pay to visit it now, although it used to be free, but you can wander around unguided. As it's so close to where I live, I've visited both on numerous occasions but I didn't go in today. The east cemetery borders the park and you can look into it from there and from Swain's Lane. This photo was taken through the fence on the Lane as I walked down
