Funchal Marathon

After the big Carnival parade last night, it was strangely subdued this morning.

All the streamers and sequins had been hoovered up promptly and Funchal was back to her pristine self.

Although it isn't in this photo, the sky was marvellously blue and this morning was not just warm, it was hot. Not perfect conditions you would think for the Marathon.

They closed off many roads and the runners were well into their stride by 11. This photo was taken as I walked back to my hotel after an idyllic morning (a cold beer in my favourite poncha bar).

Suddenly the clouds descended, but the air was still warm. These two happy competitors, medals gripped along with the oranges in their hands, posed for me and you can see just how much they had enjoyed the experience.

Not far from them there was a big medal ceremony - and while this was happening, a very elderly gentleman puffed round to the finishing line, such a long time after the fit youngsters. He was supported by great applause and admiration - and bringing up the rear were police on bicycles and an ambulance just in case.

Not sure I really want to go home tomorrow.
