Christchurch Castle:-)
Grey wet and orrible day!!We managed a quick walk around Christchurch before the rain started!!!This is whats left of Christchurch Castle!!! The ruins seen today are of a Norman motte and bailey castle that is believed to stand on the site of an earlier wooden fort in 924 AD. The wooden structures were, first strengthened by the addition of a ditch and bailey and eventually being replaced by a stone keep following the Norman Conquest in 1066. The castle controlled the harbour and inland access via the Rivers Avon and Stour, which during Saxon times was important in repelling outside invaders such as the Vikings, the Normans were much more interested in subduing the locals and enforcing the New Forest Laws, drawn up to protect William 1 for the royal hunt.:-):-)Hope everyone is having a great funday sunday:-)
