I MUST GO DOWN TO THE SEA AGAIN....
so we closed up our little Karoo cottage and laden with cheese, olives, olive oil, figs, grapes, tomatoes and a bunch of brightly coloured zinnias, we set off for the coast with our well traveled dog.
That first view of the sea is always so special. The photograph does not do the bright colours justice. The brilliant turquoise close up and the deep blue of the distant sea, enhanced by cloud shadows, contrasts with the white sandstone cliffs.
We need to travel all along the coastline of False Bay as Simon's Town is on the far side of the bay. The tide is so high that at times the sea laps the edges of the road. Then, instead of hugging the coast we opt for Boyes Drive which gives a wonderful panorama of False Bay with its broad sweeps of swell.
Now we drop down to the quirky little fishing village of Kalk Bay. Every one is promenading along the side walk. Children are running around in their bathing costumes. Hugging the coast we round the bend and there is the long sandy beach of Fish Hoek. The tide is very high and although there are lots of people walking along the beach, there are few swimmers.
Through the town we drive, with traffic lights on our side and then back to the coast passing the lovely beaches of Glencairn and Simon's Town. Along the main road with its Victorian shops and then we turn up a narrow lane between two buildings, drive past the quaint little mosque and we are home!
The bougainvillea is blooming abundantly.
