Mr Gun Munro of Pontz- field
This arch way is in the garden of the herb garden at Poyntzfield house. We visited there today to see the snowdrops and winter aconites. What a wonderful sight in the sunshine.
We were the first visitors of the season so that made us feel special :)
Some of you who dance may recognise this title as it is a Scottish, reel , c major and used for weddings and ceilidhs. It is thought to be named after the Grandson of the Ist George Gun Munro who married Charlotte Poyntz.
It's been interesting searching the internet for more details and I have been rather side tracked. So confusing when everyone is called George or goes by a different name to which they were given at birth.
The estate was originally named Ardorch meaning The HIgh Place. In 1757 it was rebuilt and renamed Poyntzfield after Charlotte Poyntz although there seems to be some confusion in the history books.
Their Grandson spent many years in the Indian Army and after marrying Jamima Charlotte Gramham he named the nearby Estate village Jemimaville or Jamimaville after her in 1822.
You can clearly see that the carving shows 1857 so I should think the gardens were built inbetween the two.
The house has been restored after falling into decline and is now used as large self catering accommodation.
The herb garden was established in 1976 and contains many medicinal and culinary herbs all grown organically and hardy enough for the Scottish climate. I did buy one small group of snowdrops, a thyme and some Black Isle chives.
We will be looking out again in hope to see the Northern Lights again. although we did nt see any colours on Thursday Night we all enjoyed watching the curtains of white glide across the sky. It was a beautiful, clear starry night too.
