Light pruning?

In the National Trust garden at Saltram, much clearing up is underway following damage caused by recent storms, when many trees were brought down. I noticed that some of the Rhododendrons had also been cut back to allow light to penetrate to the ground, and was surprised to see the tangle of stems on this one.
