Kimberley

This is our town sign..
The first settlement here was probably around 100AD during the Roman occupation of Britain.
The area later became part of the Viking-ruled Danelaw in the 9th Century, then part of Wessex and was recorded in the 1066 Domesday Book as "Chinemarelie" the open space belonging to Cynemaer, an Anglo-Saxon.
The land then passed into the hands of William de Peverel, a Norman, and later to Beauvale Priory.
The area thus has a long and interesting history combining agriculture right through the industrial revolution with coal mining, the Great Northern and Midland railways, the lace and hosiery industries, and brewing, with Hardy Hanson's Kimberley Ales (brewery long since closed down) enjoying a long and considerable reputation amongst connoisseurs of real ale. Kimberley also enjoyed a considerable reputation as a centre of Mathodism.
