The poet has missed out a verb
None of the work in this or any other of my books is to be used in connection with any examination whatsoever. I’m happy if people who like them choose to learn them, recite them or sing them in schools. But please don’t make anyone study them or write essays about them. Why? Because examinations were a social experiment which has failed dismally. And because there are too many pointless essays in the world already.
-Adrian Mitchell
Obviously some poets (mentioning no names)
are less principled and more easily flattered
if their work is pored over and used in exams.
