The Homeless World Cup
Popped into town for a wee treat - I had a card that said I could have a free hot drink and cake at John Lewis, so that was my destination. I had a huge slice of carrot cake. Which, to be honest, was quite dry, so I’m glad I hadn’t paid £3.50 for it!
The cafe downstairs is now called a cocoa bar cafe and has loud muzak! Horror of horrors!! IN John Lewis - that bastion of peace and quiet!! I couldn’t believe it. I asked a waiter why this had happened. He said they had nothing to do with JL. I pointed to their sign which included the words, John Lewis. There was nobody sitting in the side with the muzak.
Got a bargain table tennis bat and some balls (hope they’re the right size) and so I might practise my serve and get it not illegal. Don’t want to be cast out from the ‘just-for-fun-social-ping-pong-we-don’t-worry-about-winning' group...
Met a couple of ex-colleagues and caught up on all the news. A birth, a death and a marriage, actually. One of them has already been and two are imminent… We met in My Club, and suddenly someone started playing the grand piano - 'Imagine'. Nice.
Then that one that starts DA DA DA DUMMMMM (you know the one!) Really loud. Terrific.
But the first stop today was in the sunshine in the Gardens. Lots of games of five-a-side football, with teams from Holland, Italy, N Ireland and MSPs (Members of the Scottish Parliament). It's the Homeless World Cup - check it out.
I often admire the rugby and football action shots shots in the papers, but this isn’t one of them. Though I like the way they’re all spaced out.
Saw a tram. Moving. Drivers learning how to keep it on the rails. Must be quite hard - they’ve been learning for two years. What a shambles!
