Y is for.. Yanchep National Park

This is Yanchep National Park, The word Yanchep is derived from Yandjip or Yanget which is the aboriginal name for the local bulrush reed found fringing the lakes in the area.
The first European visitor arrived here in 1834.

The Western Grey Kangaroo has always inhabited this spot, at the moment there is an influx of young ones some fighting for top spot in the pecking order, we saw a couple of them boxing.

Loch McNess (in the distance, also known as Yanchep Lake) is a freshwater lake located in Yanchep N/P is named after Sir Charles McNess, a wealthy Western Australian philanthropist.

The lake is also known as Wagardu Lark by the Nyoongar aboriginals and along with the many caves found in Yanchep is of significant cultural importance.
The lake is mostly dry at this time of the year and since the drought a few years ago has never refilled to capacity, there used to be canoes on the lake they have long since gone, along with the long neck turtles that buried themselves in the sedge on the bottom of the lake.

The park is also home to the endangered Carnaby's Cockatoo, also the common Black Parrot, kookaburras and many other species.
There are over a dozen Koalas with a successful breeding programme in place.
It's one of our favourite local Parks..
