Sitting at the south end of Loch Lomond is the Balloch Steam Slipway, built in 1899 by the Dumbarton and Balloch Joint Line Committee for the purpose of hauling paddle steamers out of the water for maintenance and repairs. The winch is powered by an oil-fired twin horizontal single expansion steam engine, fabricated in 1902 by John Bennie of the Star Engine Works, Glasgow. The engine, engine house and slipway were refurbished in 2006.

The current paddle steamer, the Maid of the Loch, is one of a long line of paddle steamers that have plied the length of Loch Lomond, the largest loch/lake in Great Britain.
