Cementerio Redondo

A wall of burial niches from the unique “Cementerio Redondo” in Sayalonga.

The cemetery is actually octagonal and not quite round. We went for a wander through it after a happy lunch in Sayalonga’s sunny square (like you do...). The arched niches are the oldest, designed to take a simply wrapped body on a board, while the more modern ones are square to accommodate a coffin.

I rather like the atmosphere in these village cemeteries. They seem friendly, not at all gloomy and forbidding (sunshine helps!), and are generally sited virtually within the village itself, so at the end you just move on to a new street and still remain within your community and amongst your friends. I like that!
