Congratulations Kelsey!
It has been a very exciting couple of weeks around here. We are the very proud owners of a couple of lowly ski straps (and a downhill suit and some skis) which we bought from an Olympian! Our daughter was an alpine ski racer and raced at the FIS level for four years on the same circuit as Kelsey Serwa, our local girl who won silver for skier cross! I have to congratulate her parents for their tireless devotion to ski racing.. Her Dad spent countless hours working on the courses and her Mum was one of the best race secretaries. We used to host the downhill here at Apex, Mike had to be on course ready to help put them back together and I used to spend hours in the timing hut watching the computer screen as our daughters were clocked going thru the speed trap in the downhill at 125 kms per hour! I could never watch! It was a very nerve racking event but it laid the foundation for Kelsey to be so good at skier cross. Despite two knee surgeries and a concussion, she went on to win the world X games and now an Olympic medal!
Ski racing and skier cross are brutal sports in that it is basically inevitable that you will get injured and I'm always astonished that the racers persevere and keep coming back. Our bronze medallist in the Super G Jan Hudec has rehabbed from 7 knee surgeries! I'm just thankful that our daughter made it almost to the top with both knees intact.
Can't help wondering if Kelsey had signed her ski straps in gold sharpie instead of silver what might have happened.......
