Falls of Roy

Caley got a quick early run over the field and up the hill a wee bit.
Later on Caley and I set off up the Glen with the intention of trying a new walk previously eyed up on an earlier trip here. However the River Roy was raging in quite spectacular fashion and we couldn’t resist a quick march up to the Fall of Roy to see how they presented in such spate conditions.
There are a few notable falls in the Lochaber area. In pecking order I think Steall falls up beyond the gorge in Glen Nevis are pretty spectacular. Caig falls at the end of the Dark Mile at Achnacarry are not so high but are hugely popular because of their road side situation. By contrast there is a very secretive water fall on the Allt Chenna Mor a few miles beyond Caig and this require a hard tramp on rough ground from the north edge of Loch Arkaig to reach. I think I have blipped them once last year sometime. Falls of Roy today were pretty impressive. Heavy overnight rain and considerable snow melt had the upper reaches of this river running full bore. It’s hard to imagine that in the autumn Caley and I tip toed over this river on boulders to climb up and see the natural bridge that spans one of the southern tributaries of the Roy.

I was quite surprised to meet the fastest of a small group of walkers up here today (she was about a mile ahead of the pack). The lady was from East Yorkshire but was passionate about her walking in the Highlands and she clearly knew our locality well. Our brief –static, I was getting a possible blip- blether saw her slower friends coming in to view and she seemed very keen to maintain her lead. They had been up at the bothy a short distance before Loch Spey, which they didn’t actually reach. Their progress in both directions was greatly hindered by having to ford so many swollen burns and I think they all had very wet feet by the sounds of it.
