Life in a Northern Town

Derelict

This is the grandstand of the old Buckfastleigh national hunt racetrack, built in 1883, and abandoned in 1960.

It sits very near the A38 and I have always found it fascinating. I've watched the dilapidation over the years and have long thought it seemed like the setting for an episode of Scooby Doo. These days they hold point to point meetings on the site, but the grandstand is being reclaimed by nature.

So today we stopped the car and I actually got around to taking a photograph of it. Perhaps not the prettiest part of South Devon but a part of my childhood and for the last 28 years a welcome sign that I was on the very last leg of the long drive home.

We are installed in our hotel, off shortly for a meal with my mum and step-dad, and looking forward to a few pleasant days.

Back home in Devon.....
