"Greyfriars Bobby" - a lesson in devotion.

This weekend we have our two youngest grandchildren to look after so decided to have a train journey to Edinburgh and visit the "Mommoths of the Ice Age" exhibition in the National Museum of Scotland. The exhibition, created by The Field Museum in Chicago, was fascinating but no photography is permitted.

Very close to the museum is the famous statue of Greyfriars Bobby - the story had to be explained to the children how the Skye terrier sat by his master's grave for 14 years till he died in 1872 - the statue was erected the following year - an exact life size replica.

A plaque at the base reads " A tribute to the affectionate fidelity of Greyfriars Bobby. In 1858 this faithful dog followed the remains of his master to Greyfriars Churchyard and lingered near the spot until his death in 1872."
The faithful dog has his own grave in the churchyard - the statue itself is apparently a category A listed building.
