The Rookery

I thought I'd go out and try to capture some Chicago architecture today, but with a windchill of -11C I decided it would be best to stick to interior shots!

The Rookery was Chicago's first skyscraper. It's only 12 storeys high, but for 1888 that was quite something!

Its "light court", a two storey atrium of iron, glass and marble inlaid with gold leaf, is stunning. It's open to the public, and while I wandered around it taking photos the security guard told me lot of things about the building's history and features.

He also told me that if I wanted to see other parts of the building, I could come back for the official tour. So I did, and that's when I got the opportunity to take this picture, looking up from underneath the staircase.
