Anyone for Soup?
The concrete building in the background is John Lewis, well known purveyors of fruit tarts and indeed soups.
The small building at the front was Aberdeen's Soup Kitchen. This building was completed in 1894 and on the ground floor could accommodate 50 people at marble topped tables. A meal ticket for those who could afford it cost two old pence. This provided a meal ticket which covered both breakfast and lunch.
A meal at John Lewis today is not funded by charitable donation and costs somewhat more than one new penny, though still fairly reasonable by some standards. The Soup Kitchen closed its doors in 1987, and the building is currently home to Jo Malone, a shop with which I must admit I am not familiar.
