Pitt's Pictures

Finished work and came home to try and take a photo for this week’s theme of WINDOWS or DOORS. A bit of Internet research at lunchtime came up with Pitts Picture windows.

"In an attempt to impose a tax relative to the prosperity of the taxpayer, window tax was introduced in England in 1696. The tax was extremely unpopular, because it was seen as a tax on “light and air”, and many people responded by bricking up their window-spaces. In Scotland, this Window Tax was imposed only a century later by William Pitt the Younger in the 1780s. It was first introduced in the financial district of Edinburgh, and to this day “Pitt’s Pictures” (blacked out windows with white painted cross-frames) can be seen in Charlotte Square. The tax lead to the introduction of another new word into English lexicon: “daylight robbery”.

So it was off to Charlotte square tonight before going to collect J from the airport to try and take some photos. Its the sort of thing that you never really notice until you are looking for it, but sure enough there are a few houses with painted on windows in the square.
Collected J and went swimming. Hard night in the pool but I did managed to do 1700m. Half of which I managed to do breathing from both sides. Need more practice, as that half was 2 minutes slower.

This might have to be my entry to the weekly challenge.
