What struck my fancy

The old wind pump . . . .

is situated at Wicken Fen, a nature reserve run by The National Trust, about 18 miles north east of Cambridge. Those with sharp eyes will see that the sails look a bit too low to rotate and indeed the structure sustained damage in recent severe winds. Repairs are starting at the end of the month.

A system of drainage channels and various pumps are meant to keep this low flat area (the fens) relatively free of surface water; a bit of a challenge in recent weeks!
