The end of a hot day
She started at seven, wheeled mixed and laboured until 4.30, had one meal of nsima (which is a maize flour), carried baby all the time except for the few occasions when she left her in the shade to sleep, and she considers herself to be one of the lucky ones, because she had a job today and a few kwacha to bring home.
Maria is, one of three, female casual workers at the factory site in Luinga, where she works with a gang of bricklayers, building the wall to enclose the site.
Here we see her having a wash (the men had taken over the tank) before going home to feed her family. As I dropped her off close to her house I wondered what unfair twist of fate dealt her this hand and why was our world so inequitable?
The temperature rose as high as 40 degrees Celsius or close to 100.
