Coltishall Station on the Bure Valley Railway

Coltishall is on the East Norfolk Railway branch to Aylsham between Hoveton and Wroxham and Buxton Lammas.

Here you can see the former station buildings now a house, a pedestrian bridge and two road bridges.

It was opened in July 1879 and wound its way through the Norfolk countryside to Aylsham and then County School on the Great Eastern's long branch from Wymondam to Wells-next-the-Sea. This enabled the 'round the world' service leaving Norwich Thorpe and via Wroxham, Aylsham, County School and Wymondham and back to Norwich.

It can never have been very profitable relying on agricultural products and supplies. However when the Air Ministry opened RAF Coltishall just before the outbreak of the Second World War, the branch line came into its own, although actually Buxton station is physically closer to the airfield.

The station closed to passengers in 1952 and to freight in 1965. However it was re-opened as part of the narrow gauge Bure Valley Railway in 1990.
