An introduced drone fly which are widely established in New Zealand. The drone fly has black compound eyes, which are connected by hairy bends above and below. The female eyes are separated, while the males meet - this is a male. They mimic bees and feed on honey and pollen and are great pollinators of flowers. Males have hovering displays.
A pleasant summer day, 27C with just a slight breeze. Windows and doors are flung open with the piercing sound of cicadas drifting inside, plenty of butterflies and insects in the garden and a few birds hopping along the fence line eyeing up the bird bath.
Just taking it easy at our house, enjoying the last month of long summer days.
Happy Sunday everyone :)
