Free Food!

Everything is good when there is free food! Today I worked all day at a WWS event, this time with 'Realising Opportunities'. As it says on their website,

'Realising Opportunities is an innovative outreach programme bringing together twelve of the country's leading Research Intensive Universities. The programme recruits over 500 year 12 students nationally and supports them through a structured programme of events and activities aimed at supporting their university aspirations.

Students on the Realising Opportunities Programme will:

- Attend Information, Advice and Guidance sessions at the University of Warwick;
- Be linked with a current undergraduate e-mentor;
- Attend the National Student Conference;
- Gain academic support for the Extended Project Qualification or Academic Assignment;
- Complete an online study module hosted by the University of Birmingham

Students that successfully complete the Realising Opportunities Programme will be eligible to receive additional consideration and support through the UCAS system if applying to one of the partner universities.'

Our aim today was to introduce everyone to each other, and then try and get them talking. The majority had come on their own, so had to make friends quickly. Most had parents with them, which is brilliant, as with parental support it makes it much more likely that they will complete the course. The parents were taken on campus tours, and had talks on how to help their children get to university while we took them and did some icebreaker sessions with them. A really enjoyable day spent with motivated young people, what more can I say?

Oh, and we got free food afterwards. Did I mention that?

Thom is away this weekend with the boys watching the football, I hope for his sake that they have a good time even though Villa lost to Everton!
