Adelaide University Footbridge

In May this year it will be 42 years since the drowning of Dr George Duncan in the Torrens River. It remains an unsolved murder mystery although the suspicions have lingered for years.

In 1972 Dr George Duncan was a prestigious recruit from England to the University of Adelaide's law school . He had only been in Adelaide several months and was walking near the University footbridge. I did not get up closer today for this shot due to the very heavy rain.

There he was attacked by persons unknown. Dr. Duncan was bashed and thrown into the Torrens River and drowned. Given that Dr. Duncan was so committed to the concept of justice and the functioning of law in society, he would have been pleased to see that his memory has been transformed into a rallying point around social justice in society in Australia today.

The University Footbridge, built in 1937, is significant for its association with the development of the University of Adelaide. It connects the University to North Adelaide, where its sports fields and residential colleges are located.
