Huhu
Another gloomy day so I went in search of detail. This 5cm huhu beetle filled the bill nicely. They are wood boring insects and deposit their eggs in dead trees ,where they become huge, white grubs munching holes until they pupate. The early Maori people used them as a food source and I am told they taste much like peanut butter when cooked.
