Today's the day ..................... to bask

We left Nelson and headed southwest on SH6 through the Buller Gorge - to Westport on the west coast of South Island.

This coastline is very exposed to the full force of the westerly winds - and it was while sailing up the coast in the Endeavour, on 20 March 1770, that Lieutenant James Cook was so battered by persistent rain and gales that he recorded the headland to the south of Westport as 'a cape of foul winds'. The name stuck and Cape Foulwind is what it has remained.

Today though, it was all very calm - and very warm in the sunshine. The wildlife of this cape is very special - and includes a colony of fur seals. There were quite a few to be seen - some with their pups - enjoying the heat and basking on the rocks in the sun ..............



PS We are now staying in a lovely little place called Ann's Cottage at Hokitika. There's no WiFi but we were instructed to go and sit on the wall outside the public library. You can get it 24/7 there for free!
