The Bird

Salts Mill Chimney, Saltaire, W.Yorks. UK

The chimney is 76.2 m high or 250ft. It was used to dissipate the fumes from boilers used to create steam to power 1200 looms. The boilers consumed 50 tons of coal a day.

The cracks look alarming and it wouldn't be the first chimney to collapse - in 1882 the Newlands Mill chimney in Bradford collapsed killing 52 people. It was the same height and weighed 4000 tons.
