Mighty Mouse...
...my ar5e!
A classic case of form over function. After yesterday's technology blip and the extolling of both platform's virtues, I'm afraid wrestling with Apple's so called Might Mouse this evening has lost the Fruity wonder some kudos points.
The tiny trackball has a habit of regularly giving up the ghost on its scrolling action, due to index fingers transferring their greasy deposits into the workings of the mouse. Those small 6mm wheels covered in gunk are testament to this (See BIG version if you've the stomach). Normally a good hard rub and a skoosh of Mr Muscle clear this muck away, but the past couple of days of misbehaving had forced me to perform major surgery on the reticent rodent. But, of course, Apple being Apple, nothing's ever easy.
First, there's absolutely no screws on the case to remove. The whole mechanism is kept in place by a ring of plastic that's actually super-glued on to the body. After forcing this apart I managed to get access to the scroll-ball component. After many, many expletives I eventually managed to undo the three screws holding this in place (screws that seemed to be tightened to within a nanometre of their tolerance!). Taking apart this component revealed the gunk which was duly removed with a hi-tech cotton bud.
Whilst I was at this, I also dragged out another Mighty Mouse that I'd replaced with this one, took that apart and gave it a good old service too. And it worked!
So, Michty Me, I've now got two Michty Mice - along with a few extra blisters and an intimate knowledge of the insides of these beasts. And, of course, Apple being Apple (have I said that before?) they've only gone and replaced this Mighty Mouse with a Magic Mouse.
I bet it isn't.
Have a great weekend folks!
