Looking onto the River. Nostalgia
I've always liked the look of this house on the terrace at Barnes. When the owners first looked out from those bay windows it would probably have been over a cobbled road with an occasional horse and cart or carriage, and down a grassy bank to the Thames flowing below. There might have been trees lining the road like the ones there still are just upstream, painted by Turner.
The Lower Richmond Road now carries an almost continuous stream of cars and lorries; there is a functional concrete flood-defence wall (compare the little wall in front of the house), and aircraft boom overhead.
But, for those attuned to modern city life, it's still a lovely place!
